"Thank you so much for your recent workshop 'A Parent's Guide to the Internet.'

As a mother who stopped working before the Age of the Internet, I am truly at a disadvantage when it comes to regulating my children's use of the Internet. Your presentation provided me with basic safety tools, as well as opened my eyes to the need for closer parental monitoring. Your technological expertise, combined with your knowledge of child developmental levels (from both a teacher and parent perspective) provided information that was concise, relevant, and easy to understand."

Social Networking Issues and Resources: [top]

There have been numerous articles in newspapers around the U.S. about teens who have been arrested, denied admissions or even expelled from private secondary schools, colleges and universities because of content found in their social networks. Below are just a few links to articles that speak to this point and other issues associated with social networks. Though some of these articles date back to 2006 the problems these articles speak to have gotten worse. The illusion of privacy online has gotten worse and MORE people, not less, are viewing private pages. Facebook even sells access to private pages to companies who want to analyze how to better target teens with marketing! Methods for hacking private pages are posted online. However, we hear that the easiest method for anyone to gain access to "private" pages is simply to trick someone connected to a network of users.

Problems often arise because teens, who think their social network pages are private, post content that is illegal, offensive, disparaging, embarassing, hurtful, etc. It is content that often exhibits poor choices or bad behavior. Colleges admissions officers, potential employers, camp directors, police and others ARE finding them and using what they see to make evaluations or even arrests. Teens also need to keep in mind that though they may be vigilant about the people they let into their site, if others on their network are not so careful then their vigilance means nothing. Also, once that embarassing photo or harassing paragraph is posted on the Internet, it is there forever!

Firefox is one of the very best, most secure web browsers and has hundreds of plug-ins that increase functionality. Here are several relating to content filtering and privacy:
FoxFilter is a personal content filter that helps prevent stumbling onto inappropriate content and block access to specific content and Web sites.

ProCon Latte: Filter web pages containing explicit content based on text on websites.

Leech Block is a simple productivity tool designed to block any web site. You can specify up to six sets of sites to block, with different times and days for each set. You can block sites within fixed time periods (e.g., between 9am and 5pm), after a time limit (e.g., 10 minutes in every hour), or with a combination of time periods and time limit (e.g., 10 minutes in every hour between 9am and 5pm). You can also set a password for access to the extension options, just to slow you down in moments of weakness!

"I used Procon latte to stop my kids from getting on to sites i didn't want them to and it works perfectly for that, it wasn't soon after that i found a more brilliant solution, if you download the Procon add on and the leech block add on it all fits very well, the combination is brilliant you get the white list and the profanity filter from Procon and ad blocking and time filtering from leech block, the 2 become a perfect parental control system, just make sure you have your own custom block page for each add on."
